After reading this week’s issue brief on health and globalization, answer the following questions in an essay with a minimum of 500 words in length:

If the movement of people, food, and manufactured goods can have such a negative impact on public health, should steps be taken to reduce these flows? What other options are there for lowering the spread of global diseases?

Steps definitely are taken and have to be taken to reduce the flow of people, food and manufactured goods.

Border controls

Due to difficulties in Zimbabwe, people are left with no option than to jump borders, entering Botswana, South Africa etc. without passports. When someone can enter a country not through the required entry points then that person is dangerous to the society, because you don’t know what he or she is carrying in terms of diseases, he or she is untraceable. Imagine if someone has Ebola and jumped the border, when he or she mingles with the society, then hell break loose. Nations need to border well their countries to limit border jumpers who are easily bringing foreign diseases.

Immigration controls

If a country is well bordered then a point of entry needs some vigorous controls. Passports should be the first control. When Ebola spread in Africa, Botswana borders would check passports of immigrants to see if they are somehow from the affected countries, and would help them screen people at the border.
