Lower Level Math Classes

Improved Essays
Growing up dyslexic, math was never a strong subject for me. The public schools I attended never knew what to do with me. Most of my teachers that I had would recommend that I should placed in a lower level math class or special education. This put me behind in math classes when I decided to attend a junior college after high school. I have always liked math, I just tended to learn it slower than the average student. Being placed in lower level math classes, because I was a slower learner, really discouraged me and made me feel stupid. At first I would try the best, but eventually I would get behind and then lost. At that point I usually would be placed in an easier math class. The problem with schools doing that to me is that I think out …show more content…
This became boring and I eventually lost interest. My senior year of high school I was placed in another class, a normal event for me by then, where I came across a very good teacher named Mr. Mike Britton. Mr. Britton was always willing to help me with math. Even though I was not technically in his class, I did use his classroom for my independent studies. He was always willing to teach me, at a slower pace, the math a senior in high school should be taking, like algebra. He was the first teacher to help me in this way. Before getting help from Mr. Britton, I felt like I was never going to be able to take normal math classes. After spending time working with him, I was not so discouraged about math and started to enjoy it. After graduating high school and moving on to a junior college I scored low on the math assessment test. This meant …show more content…
I am surprised how much math he has learned from some of the programs he watches and even the children’s applications on his apple touch. He is always asking me questions about math and I am happy that he is interested in math so early in life. I know that when he is older, I am going to have a hard time helping him with his homework. I am looking forward to taking algebra and even learning statistics. I think after taking these classes, I will be better prepared for the time when my son is taking higher math in school and needs my help. The math classes for my degree may be the hardest classes in the whole program for me, but this time I am not going to give up. I am going to seek out help when I need it. I will use any and all resources given to me. I may even ask my old teacher and now friend, Mr. Britton for help. I read an article called “Defining My Dyslexia” (Charlton, 2013) about a man who went through the same things I did in school. Even through all of that he was successful. He has written two novels and even went to medical school. This has inspired me to do whatever it takes to be successful and at this point in my life I am ready for the

Math had always came easily to me. I was known as the math know-it-all because I would be finished with homework assignments before class was even over. Thus, in ninth grade, my Algebra I teacher told me that I should go into a honor level math class. My first honors level class was a breeze to me. We could hand in homework late, revise tests and quizzes, and had perfect notes given to us in class.…

At times I knew the material well, but was unable to demonstrate my mastery of the material on an exam due to anxiety. Through hard work, I have learned coping mechanisms for my anxiety, and my grades on my post-baccalaureate courses attest to the great progress I have made in this area. In addition, I am severely dyslexic. This too is an innate weakness that I have worked hard to overcome. While I developed into a voracious reader in 6th grade, it has taken longer for me to hone my writing skills.…

”Any taste I had for math went straight out of my life never to return. 7th grade wasn't a great improvement, as my teacher most often referred to me as “Natalie” a friend of mine who shared my blonde hair. This however pales in comparison to the worst math experience (and worst school experience) of my life thus far that came in the shape of 11th grade Pre-Calculus. By this point, I had known for years that I didn't like math, but until this class I had never feared it. As I had been diagnosed with a…

Throughout the exercise, during the few times I answered yes to Dr. Pirkey’ s statements, I remained taking normal sized steps. My final stopping point was the back. My childhood memories regarding learning mathematics has been for the most part positive from 6th grade onwards. From 1st grade to 5th grade I was not conscientious so at times math tests produced anxiety but math was, at the same time, easier and simpler back then. I recall being the fastest person to state the multiplication tables in 4th grade. During 6th to 8th grade, although I was not necessarily the smartest, I landed at the top of the class in advance math since I was very hard working. However in 9th grade I recalled a horrific incident.…

As a teacher, my belief is that students be taught the importance of mathematics in the daily life. I also stand firm that students should also be taught important life lessons that relate to how to succeed and prepare for the future. I think that it is inevitable that students be taught basic curriculum in mathematics. I agree that concepts of Algebra, Geometry, and Statistics be taught but I also think that students should be taught mathematics that deals with finances earlier then the college level. Everyone I let know says I am crazy for going into Math education.…
