Low Self-Esteem In 'The Skin I' M In

The Skin I’m In is a great book for people that have a low self-esteem. I chose to read this book because the title made me curious. I honestly thought this book was lame until began to see that the main character and I had a lot in common. The genre of the book is realistic fiction because this can happen in real life. Taking any from this book, I learned to love the way I look no matter what skin color I am. It all starts with Maleeka Madison. A thirteen-year old smart, intelligent, tall, skinny, dark-skinned girl that is bullied about her appearance. She attended McClenton Middle School, located in Washington D.C. She was in the seventh grade but her height made her look like a highschooler. Maleeka has a diary that she writes in daily. She makes up this imaginary person named Akeelma. I liked how Maleeka had to learn from her mistakes. Being friends with her enemies wasn’t always the answer. The best part of book is when Maleeka and Caleb were together. They’re relationship was cute, but Caleb was a weak guy for letting other people’s options break them up. The story made me feel like how I was back in elementary school. I use to get bullied about my gap in between my two front teeth. I never wanted to smile or laugh. My mom saw me crying about it one day and she told me that I’ll never be happy until I love it. I always tried to figure out what that means but that I’m older, I love everything about me! I would recommend this book to anybody that feels like they need an example of trying to love themselves. This book shows how little black girls feel every day. I would love to be that person to remind them that they are beautiful and smart. I would read another book from this author because of the theme. Things like this happen in real
