Women lack ambition. Women don’t like to compete. Women don’t ask for payrises. Women innately prefer low-paid, caring jobs. We’ve heard it all. Such attempts to explain away the gender pay gap — now at its widest in two decades — smack of blaming the victim. Now more than ever, the gap between men and women's paypackets has been on the agenda, especially since Australia has had a persistent gender pay gap subsequent to 1990. This wage gap may be the result of indirect or even sometimes direct sexism which is an increasingly irritable fact that women face. The problem of this inequality has also been caused by women's over representation in low paying positions versus high paying positions. As well as this, the gender stereotypes that are forced not only upon women but men as well, contribute to the current state of inequity.

The pay gap exists because of women's over representation in low paying positions versus high paying positions. From the research conducted, Women are seen to be over represented in the lower paying jobs in each of their industries. Women hold jobs such as data entry in finance and are under represented in

These prejudices exist on a very large scale, although for most people it is an unconscious bias. There is an economically unexplainable sector of the pay gap, as calculated by 'the comprehensive review of women in the US economy' of about 4-8 percent. This 4-8 percent gap cannot be explained through women working in lower paid professions or having less paid hours. This sector of the wage gap is most likely caused by gender discrimination. Companies that attempt to address unconscious bias through training programs and other equality programs will assist in reducing prejudice. This fact magnifies the need for pay transparency, so that all female workers are aware of what their male counter-parts are
