Low-Income Vulnerable Population
The vulnerable population of low income clients encompasses a large range of people who encounter special challenges other than just their income that contributes to the stratification of their vulnerability. Low-income families have “stressful social disorganization” as a normative reality of life, often needing additional support services in order to survive. The low-income population is normally represented by poverty, destitution, and unemployment. Many in this classification have not finished high school; do not have or seek proper medical care; they do not have affordable housing and insufficient food, decent clothing, poor parenting skills, unemployment, and they do not have any trade skills to acquire …show more content…
I knocked on the door and a male opened the door and yelled, “Gloria, the lady is here”. She yelled down, saying “good morning, I will be right down”. Toys, paper and empty soda bottles were on the floor. I cat was on the table licking and empty plate. There was sporadic clothing laying around on the floor and the furniture (table, chairs, and banister). Three big bags of clothes sat in a corner at the door with names on each bag. A partial view into the kitchen revealed dirty dishes in the sink, pots and pans on the stove with utensils in them. Gloria came running down the stairs apologizing for not being ready for the meeting. She was trying to pick up some things that were out of place. She explained she was running late and had just dropped the kids off at school. She said she had a headache and was not feeling well. At the beginning of the meeting I explained we were notified due to a couple of concerns the school and hospital had. The school felt the children were missing too many days and after several warnings the children’s absences continued. I explained the hospital had some concerns after her son’s was born premature and he still remains in the NICU at Christina Hospital in Newark, DE. Water was in her eyes. She said “I just have so much going on. I feel like I am all along and have no one to help me.” She said her husband is a felon and can’t find a job. She …show more content…
The goal is to help strengthen the family unit beginning with raising children in a healthy nurturing environment. The program assist with life skills (finding employment, assistance with filling out applications for services, building resumes, etc.). They also help the client connect to additional community resources (food bank, cribs for kids, clothing closet, etc.). This agency also teaches “Triple P” (Positive Parenting Program) teaching the client how to deal with behavior and discipline issues.
Housing – Connecting with Connections Community Support Program to get assistance with the client’s housing issues. This program will assist the client with locating housing finances (paying the rent). Because the client’s husband is a felon this program may be more useful as they also assist with homeless housing for people leaving an institution including prison.
Substance Abuse – Brandywine Counseling & Community Services (BCCS) program offers multiple services the client would benefit from. Their drug and alcohol treatment program will teach the client how to handle life without drugs. Their counseling program will help the client identify areas of stress via private and or group counseling sessions. They also provide outpatient services that will allow the client to maintain other family responsibilities.
