Osteosarcoma is a type of cancer that starts in the bones. Osteosarcoma develops in children as well as young adults in areas where bone grows quickly. Types of osteosarcoma can be determined by what shows up on an imaging test. The cancer can be classified as High-grade, Intermediate-grade, and Low-grade. High-grade osteosarcomas are the fastest growing osteosarcoma. When studied under a microscope, many cells dividing into new cells are observed. High-grade most often is seen in children. Some examples of high grade osteosarcomas are Osteoblastic, Chondroblastic, Fibroblastic, Mixed, Small cell, Telangiectatic, High-grade surface (juxtacortical high grade). Intermediate-grade osteosarcomas are Normally treated as if they are low-grade, these uncommon tumors fall in between high-grade and low-grade osteosarcoma. An intermediate osteosarcoma is Periosteal (juxtacortical intermediate grade). Low-grade osteosarcomas are the slowest growing osteosarcoma. Resemble normal bones with few dividing cells present., some low grade osteosarcomas are, Parosteal (juxtacortical low grade) and Intramedullary or intraosseous well differentiated (low-grade central). …show more content…

Together, they cause immature bone cells to become tumor cells instead of healthy bone. Osteosarcoma may start because of overactive bone cells. A gene known as RB may be associated with osteosarcoma. This gene is abnormal in many children with a rare type of eye cancer called retinoblastoma.
