Lowndes High School Clinic plays a crucial role in managing already existing disease or disorder and promoting health and safety of its students and help them to establish healthy behavior patterns. There are three thousand students in the Lowndes High School and all of them spend approximately one-third of their day in school. During the day the majority of students come with minor issues, such as headache, stomachache, cuts, bruises, or sore throat. These issues do not require immediate medical attention, but worth for the school nurse to look at. On my clinical day a lot of students came with stomachache. The first question nurse asked the students was, if they had a breakfast that morning. The answer was negative. A different student came with complain of a sharp pain in the abdomen. Nurse was curious when did the last time the student use the bathroom. Student’s answer was “three days ago”. The school nurse educated students about the necessity of breakfast for the growing body and the need for a regular bowel movement schedule. They usually check students’ vision and hearing on Fridays. Since last Friday was a down day due to the storm Hermine, I was able to assist with hearing screening. I had to ask a student to put the headphones on, handle them a knob, and say to press it any time they hear any noise or a beep. First, I had to measure frequency at 500, 1000, 2000, and 4000 Hz and volume at from 25 to 30 dB. Frequency range of 500-400 Hz is critical for hearing and understanding speech. People usually speak at intensity of 25-30 dB. Then, evaluate the result on the paper if a student has passed the hearing test. All of the school students passed hearing check.
