The agency is middle school in the city that primarily serves low-income children of color. The family is composed of five members: two parents of opposite genders, and then three children, all females. The parents are both in their forties. The children, are ages fourteen, thirteen and six. They are a Dominican-American family. Both parents are first generation immigrants. The father does not speak English, and the father has limited English fluency. All three daughters are fluent in English.
The mother, due to her limited-comprehension of English, works a low-wage job and is the primary provider for the family. The father is a stay at home father and attends most of the parent-teacher conferences as well handles most communication with the school. One of these factors is Elizabeth’s mental health and physical health issues. Elizabeth experiences unexplained chest pains and stomach pains for which she is often sick from school or hospitalized for. There is not medical explanation for these symptoms though. Additionally, Elizabeth has a history of depression and other mental illness issue. These are factors that may impact her performance and behavior at school. For example, Elizabeth frequently missing school may result in her missing a lot of class material and struggling to complete homework or choosing not to complete it at all. The family being bilingual is also a personal issue that may contribute to the presenting issue. The bilingual nature of the family impact communication between children and parents.
