There is a huge section of the poem that is completely all personification. A small example of this is, “The yellow fog that rubs its back upon the window-panes, The yellow smoke that rubs its muzzle on the window-panes.” (Lines 15-16) I use this as my first example because the yellow fog represents fear and insecurity which keeps him “inside the house” so he doesn’t get hurt. My second example from this section is “And seeing that it was a soft October night, Curled once about the house, and fell asleep” (Lines 21-22). It talks about at that current moment he was comfortable and he didn’t worry about all the things he was missing out on. It wasn’t affecting him in a negative way that he could see. T.S. Elliot using personification helps the reader understand the deeper meaning on their level.
