Disappearance of The Felines People often let their emotions get in the way of doing the right thing. Whether it is love, anger, sadness, or fear, most of the actions people make are based on how they feel. The short story “The Cats of Ulthar” was written by H.P. Lovecraft and taken place in Ancient Egypt. The story involves a young yet sacred orphan boy named Menes who has no friends other than his tiny black kitten. Lovecraft uses foreshadowing and irony to prove that doing immoral things will result in bad karma as well as dark mood and juxtaposition to explain that people tend to stay out of difficult situations when frightened. After a week of realizing that the old couple’s home seemed empty with no lights appearing throughout the day, a burgomaster decided to go inside and he found “two cleanly picked human skeletons on the earthen floor, and a number of singular beetles crawling in the shadowy corners” (8). The death of the couple was a message that treating others with respect is extremely important, no matter if it is a human being or an animal. If respecting others is not a main priority in someone’s life and harming is, karma will come to them in one way or another. It takes courage to stand up for what someone believes in. Fear is a common emotion that tends to block people from defending others; whether they are scared of being in danger themselves, or being too involved in the situation. The old couple’s home was very mysterious and concealed, “their cottage was so small and darkly hidden under spreading oaks at the back of the neglected yard” (2). The suspicious surroundings of their home created an unsettling and skeptical feeling for the villagers, causing them to stay away and keep their cats close. Even out of all the hate the villagers had for the couple, no one dared to confront them “the villagers did not discuss such things with the old man and his wife” (2). Although the villagers were too scared to do anything, the unexpected took action to save the village- the help of a young boys prayer and the hunger of a few
