Love was being portrayed between Jamie and Larissa in the battle of backlight. In the battle, the operatives faced one their greatest adversaries to the date, Valeri Rusamanov. Jamie and Larissa’s relationship was portrayed before the battle patently: “Jamie, listen to me, I called to tell you that I love you. Okay? I don’t want to never have said it” (Hill 489). Their relationship has been complicated for the most part in the novel. Despite the undeniable fact that one is human, and the other is a vampire, they experience their typical teenage relationship. After the battle of black light, Larissa, miraculously surviving an ultraviolet nuclear explosion, mused of Jamie, before she saw him sprinting toward her. Their love between each other was portrayed in this section: “She clamped her arms around him and felt his face bury itself in her neck, felt the heat from his skin and the damp that was gathering around his eyes, and her heart swelled with happiness and relief” (Hill 525).
