Let’s be upfront instantly: one cannot measure the Karachiites love for food on a love meter. It’s just unlimited even if you try to calculate. George Bernard Shaw was onto something when he said, "There is no sincerer love than the love of food." Being a foodie’s hub, Karachi has a specific food scene that hands down couldn’t be found anywhere but in Karachi. Food is legit a goal to look forward to when Karachiites plan to hang out with friends and family. It’s just till they catch up a whiff of spicy, tangy food and sharp aromas titillating the taste buds. One minute you might find girls’ muttering at how oil-laden the parathas are; and the other minute you’ll find them drooling over the spicy gol gappas or chana chaat.

Haleem defines perfection just so effortlessly. Preparing Haleem though is a tiresome task but the end result overwhelms you the most. Haleem is one of the original “generosity dishes”, meaning it was always prepared with the intention of sharing and thus if there’s anything that hits home, it’s Haleem. To differentiate from the rest of the Islamic months; Muharram in Karachi is incomplete without Haleem. Haleem’s evolution is from Middle Eastern Cuisine Harissa and has travelled all the way from Arab Countries to Pakistan and Karachi.

Katakat
In case you are unfamiliar with the term, Katakat is a meat dish is made specifically with kidneys, brain, liver and heart of the animals; cooked in butter and spiced with sizzling masala, whole tomatoes, green chilies and sliced garlic. This appetizing dish is usually made on a huge flat pans and is literally chopped 100 times on the pan with two hand spatulas that makes the actual ‘’kat-a-kat’’ sound, hence the name. The dish may sound repulsive but it’s the best thing to taste and take whiff of in Karachi!
