Waves crashing on the rocks below, giant cedars towering overhead, it is unquestionably an authentic west coast experience. Inspired by the breathtaking vista, I stopped for a few minutes to savour the view. As I gazed out across the mighty ocean swell, my eyes came to rest on a single, solitary padlock chained to the protective guard rail. A symbol of commitment and everlasting love, this little lock hung precariously over the angry ocean below, bravely battling the elements.

In this passage, Julie Otsuka uses the rhetorical device of metaphor to contrast the material nature of the Mother’s key with the sacredness of fading memories. By contorting the gears and mechanisms of a lock, the key provides access into the Mother’s home, yet until this point its purpose is to open a source of immaterial memories. The phrase, “The key had become part of her. It was always there, a small, dark shape, dangling,” uncovers unique similarities between the key’s palpable attributes and its symbolic meaning (107). Just as the key, small and dark, clings by a single thread from the Mother’s neck so do her fuzzy, slowly fleeting memories of home.…

As I peered down the bluff, I saw the magnificent black-and-white beasts breach the water of the Salish Sea. The L-pod resident orcas were gliding past Henry Island in the San Juan Islands of Washington State. This sight reminded me why I was in the San Juans in the first place: to appreciate nature and do my part to protect it. I finally got to experience these natural beauties that I had heard oh-so-much about from the locals. The sea breeze flowed onto my face, and I appreciated the wonder of it all.…

I’ve always loved the outdoors and the sense of adventure that only nature can bring, which is how one day last summer I ended up ziplining in Tennessee. As I hooked my harness into the final platform and looked over the mountains, I experienced a sense of wonder. All of my problems seemed far away, and I felt invincible while breathing in the clear air that seemed to hold infinite opportunities waiting to be discovered. I didn’t know it then, but I would later be reminded of this moment while reading Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer, which tells the story of Christopher McCandless. McCandless grew up in a wealthy family but gave up all of his possessions to wander the country and discover the world’s truths, which eventually led him to his final…

During April of 2015, I stepped out of the car and onto the beach for the first time in Destin, Florida; the salty sea stung my nose as I breathed in a refreshing breath of briny air. The first step onto the sand was like a bed of blankets; soft and comfortable. The way the white sand glided onto my feet and squished between my toes felt like heaven. The waves were singing a delicate lullaby, pulling me closer to them. As I walk towards the ocean with the warm sand beneath my feet, the cold waves lap at my ankles, as if they want to take me away.…
