In romantic films, the main characters are taken through a journey, in which they go through obstacles and learn how genuine and strong the love they have for each other is. The films, “Love is a many Splendored Thing” and “The Big Sick” are romance films that show the obstacles that two characters experience. The filmLove is a Many Splendored Thing,” is about an American reporter named, Mark Elliot, who is covering the Chinese civil war and while undergoing a separation from his wife, he meets a widowed Chinese doctor called, Han Suyin. Mark and Han Suyin encounter the disapproval from her family and his friends because of their interracial love. The film “The Big Sick,” is about a Pakistani comedian named, Kumail, who meets a grad student called, Emily, they fall in love but struggle because of their different backgrounds. These two films are both romance genres in which the couples struggle because of their different ethnicities. …show more content…
In “Love is a Many Splendored Thing,” Han Suyin and Mark Elliot fall in love fast and are forced to keep their love a secret because of her family and Hong Kong’s strict racial laws. In “The Big Sick,” Emily and Kumail fall in love, but unlike the other film, Kumail lets go of Emily because he believes their backgrounds are not an obstacle they can surpass, then he finds out Emily is under a medicated coma and meets her family who do not approve at the beginning. Even though both movies share this genre, they have different endings for the couples. Mark Elliot is shot at the end of the film and Han Suyin end up at the hilltop where they used to meet and seems to reminisce on the good times with him. In the end Kumail move to New York and while speaking at a comedy club, he is hackled by someone in the crowd, shown as Emily; which is the same way their love story
