Florentino would watch her pass by but never got up the courage to say anything. He would always just write it down. His writings each day was 61 pages by the time he built up enough esteem to talk to Fermina. When they met he gave her just a page summed up of everything he had originally written her. She first demanded her father’s permission but the next week she took the letter home and read every single word very carefully. By the end she knew she had to kindly accept his words and committed to being in a relationship with him. Fermina and Florentino saw each other every once in a while, but mainly wrote letters to give one another. He eventually proposed and Fermina accepted. Fermina’s worst fear was getting caught writing to him by a family member, as her relationship with Florentino was very secretive. Soon enough she was caught and busted. She got expelled and her dad declared she go on a journey with him until she had completely forgotten about her relationship with Florentino.
A couple years had gone by since she had been able to see Florentino in person. Although on her journey she met her older cousin who had helped her send telegrams to him. Throughout their years of separation they both thought they would still have a perfect relationship when Fermina came back but this wasn’t the case. When Fermina came back Florentino barely recognized her because she had matured into an adult.
