In the play, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, it gives the reader a central question the work raises to think about, and the extent to which it offers answers. The question “What is really love?” and “What’s not love?” has been a recurring central question for many authors and as well as Shakespeare. He gives the reader to think about what love really is, and “Do I really love this person?” kind of question, which is a major theme in this play. The author’s treatment of this question affects the understanding of the play. The answers throughout the play refer to the main question or theme of the book, love. “A good persuasion. Therefore, hear me, Hermia. I have a widow aunt, a dowager of great revenue, and she hath no child. From Athens is her house remote seven leagues, and she respects me as her only son. There, gentle Hermia, may I marry thee. And to that place the sharp Athenian law, cannot pursue us. If thou lovest me then, steal forth thy father’s house tomorrow night. And in the wood, a league without the town - where I did meet thee once with Helena to do observance to a mom of May - there will I stay for thee.” (III.I.158-170). This shows that Lysander does really truly love Hermia. He is doing whatever it takes to stay with Hermia always, and not let Demetrius come and ruin it by Hermia getting married to Demetrius, like their parents wanted them too. This is why they chose to run together and let Lysander’s aunt marry them. This shows and lets us understand the type of love is being portrayed here, and this is the type of feeling Hermia wants to feel towards someone not be forced to marry someone she doesn’t love nor can take at all. “Stay, gentle Helena. Hear my excuse. My love, my life, my soul, fair Helena!” (III.II.248-249). Lysander is implying that he loves Helena and hates Hermia and is treating her how Demetrius would treat Helena. Even though this is portraying “love”, this isn’t really love. He is just in love with her because of the portion, Lysander woke up to seeing Helena that’s why he loves her. But from the keywords and context of the book you can say that Lysander doesn’t really love Helena, like he loves Hermia, he is just too struck and blinded by the potion. On the other hand, Demetrius “loves” Helena and is willing to fight for her with Lysander. “I say I love thee more than he can do.” (III.II.259). This is also portraying the false meaning of love . They are not them true selves and Helena knows it. She’s accusing them of them playing a game on her and Hermia is in it too. But little does she know, she doesn’t know what’s going on either and they both don’t know that they are under a potion and have no clue what they are
