The main characters are the liars. Gat is Johnny’s future step brother, while the others are cousins. Gat and Cadence are in a confusing relationship,partaking in secret summer flings every year, with their feelings intensifying each time, despite their relationship being forbidden by Grandpa Sinclair.By Summer Seventeen, they are both in love with each other, despite Gat’s girlfriend back home.

Cadence develops the most throughout the story. At the beginning, she is a regular, rich child, but as the story develops, so does she. She realises that there is more to life than being part of the “beautiful” Sinclair family and begins to help others by donating books and toys she no longer needs, despite her mother’s wishes.
