This passage from Khaled Hosseini’s 1000 Splendid Suns is significant because it touches on a theme that is apparent throughout the entirety of the book: love. The passage describes Laila’s feelings towards her mother's depressive state. Laila fears that her mother will kill herself so she hides anything Fariba could use to take her life and when Babi notices that items are mysteriously disappearing he confronts Laila causing her to admit to the fact that she has been worrying about her mother’s life. Babi comforts her and assures her that Fariba wouldn’t do that, but leaves Laila with the pain of knowing that she is not the reason her mother has a will to live. Hosseini uses personification to describe Laila’s “dueling” feelings of assurance
