As far as maintaining the integrity of the book’s storyline goes, the film did a great job of either following or improving it. I was rewarded with scintillating performances from those actors I had been excited to see, and the hints of romance and action I’d anticipated blossomed into satisfying components of the film. In some ways, Scorch Trials lived up to my evaluation of its trailer. The music throughout the film contributed immeasurably to the story, and the use of contrast lighting throughout the film was well done. But the special effects proved to painfully amateur, and the script betrayed the epic lines of the trailer with a surprising weakness and insincerity. Most notably, my dependency on the opinions of others is far from infallible. In the case of Scorch Trials, I went to the movie in large part because other people had been praising it. Consequently, I ended up grossly overestimating the movie and being somewhat let down by the mediocrity of it. Even if the movie had been better, choosing to watch it just to “go with the in-crowd” is a pretty cowardly move. Rather than molding my behavior to take part in the conversation, I should have the courage to start a new conversation based on my independent opinion about what’s worth
