(1) Love and Mercy the 2014 film directed by Bill Pohlad follows the life of the beloved Beach Boy Brian Wilson. (2,5) A shot in the film that captures the essence of the motion picture is pool shot where Brian has his eyes wide open bubbled streaming out of his nose as if he is drowning, which could ironically foreshadow his brother’s drowning not depicted, but mentioned in the movie. This is the essence of the film because Brian his entire life was drowning under the pressure of his stardom and especially the pressure of his musical gift. When he finally breaks through the surface he grabs for the floating raft as if to keep himself up and safe. This compares to later on in his life where Malinda is his raft in his deadly pool of Landry. (3) One line of dialogue that contains the essence of the film is during Malinda and Brian’s date to the Moody Blues concert when she tells Brian she like the song and asks him if he likes it as well. Landry in turn asks Malinda about what she said to Brian. This moment in the movie shows that Malinda has a love of music, making scenes between her and Brian more special, like when he composes her a song. This more importantly demonstrates the control Landry strives to have over Brian. One whisper could not pass without his ears sensing it. This scene is one of the first where we see Landry’s sick need for control that has misshapen Brian’s life to the lonely, pitiful state it has become. Paradoxically his diagnosis of Brian as paranoid is more appropriate for himself. (4) Finally one beautifully done cut between scenes is when Brian is walking around looking for Malinda. He crosses the street just as Malinda drives towards his very cross walk in a

“The Life You Save May Be Your Own” was written by Flannery O 'Connor in the 1950 's. O 'Connor has a collection of short stories and novels mixed with her Christian background, southern style, and distorted humor. In this short story, selfish gain is the motive in Tom Shiflet and woman Crater 's encounter. The meeting of the two occurred one day while Tom Shiflet wandered near the isolated home of old woman Crater and her mentally disabled daughter Lucynell. As Tom Shiflet openly adored the sunset his eyes were secretly fixed on an old broke down automobile. In E.B. White’s essay, he speaks of the lake as a “holy spot,” he considers the lake to be holy or sacred because he notices that time almost seems to come to a stop when he is there. White speaks about how things look the same now as when he was a boy. For example, the color of the leaves and lake has not changed from the years since he had been there before. While the outside world continuously changes, himself included, he feels that the lake is a place with a magical ability to halt time. Because of this, while White watches his song engage in the activities that he used to, he can see himself in his son.…

The Cold War led to the destruction of the metaphysical psychology of the entire world since humanity faced the inevitability of changing war tactics. Love is usually depicted as an intense feeling of deep affection which can be directed towards anything. Additionally, love is often depicted as a happy ending to a story; however, it is rarely seen as a sad ending to a story. In What We Talk About When We Talk About Love, Raymond Carver portrays the theme that the feeling of love is unstable and weak, which is why love is not an everlasting experience. The couples in “Gazebo,” “Sacks,” and “What We Talk About When We Talk Love,” separate from one another due to the interference of an outside individual; thus, representing how weak the bond of love is. “Gazebo,” is a story which revolves around two individuals: Duane and Holly.…

In the article “Different but (Probably) Equal”, Olivia Judson makes her claim stating male and females are inherently different due to different factors such as genetics and brain chemistry, but this does not necessarily make one sex better than another. The author uses mainly logos, or logical facts, such as examples of differences in appearance or behavior throughout the animal kingdom to prove her point successfully. Judson backs up her claim with scientific evidence and ultimately proves her point efficiently and effectively. Judson opens her article with a hypothesis: male and female humans are virtually indistinguishable when it comes to behavior and intellectual prowess.…
