Love and a quick question by Robert Frost is a poem about a young man who is with his bride in a country house away from people. He, together with his bride have probably gone there so they cannot be disturbed as they seek to enjoy each other’s love, but a stranger appears seeking shelter for the night. Being a secluded place, there was no other shelter in the vicinity except the one the groom and his bride were residing in. As stated in the first stanza, ‘the stranger came to the door and spoke the bridegroom fair’ (Poetry Foundation, n.d). This means that the bride and the groom intended to enjoy themselves and build their love and connection. In addition, the action of the groom to deny the stranger shelter points to romanticism towards his bride. The author states, ‘the bridegroom looked at the weary road, yet only saw but her within’ (Poetry Foundation, n.d). This was perhaps because he looked back and saw his bride brimming with desire and he could not deny her the romance and connection that had led them to the country house in the first place. As stated within the poem, ‘her face rose red with the glowing coal, and the thoughts of her heart’s desires’. Through the poem, a beautiful picture of a young bride awaiting her groom with a glowing face creates an overwhelming anticipation of fulfilling love. However, although Frost choses romantic love over compassionate love, all forms of love are important and we all have, at one time or another, to choose a form of love and negate the other. Romantic and compassionate love are just examples of the various forms of love that exist. Despite the fact that we have to embrace one and neglect the other, you can still show generosity to the other form of love even though you do not accept it.
