In the story, three girls walk into the store in nothing but bathing suits, and we follow Sammy’s reaction to the events that occur because of them. Sammy stands up for the girls against the sign “no bathing suits allowed,” but the girls don't stick around long enough to thank their hero. One thing leads to another, Sammy end up quitting his job, a job just his parents helped him get. The dialogue between the narrators and the story manager makes the entire story, during the conversation, the manager brought out Sammy’s parents several times as a threat. He “reminds” Sammy about how his behaviors would have an impact on his parents’ reputation repetitively. Despite all the warnings, he still insists on quitting the job, to prove his mutuality, his transformation from teen years to adulthood. Updike uses the narrator to express his point of view of how young people acts nowadays. We intend to act like grown-ups, to show our maturities. Most of all, we act recklessly, do things without thinking about consequences, we enjoy the rush, the thrill. I found myself having the same experience in life. My parents are well respected and known in the medical field. Having two MD/Ph.Ds as parents, I surely live under lots of pressures. I would get “friendly reminders” and lectures about how I should behave and what I am supposed to do in the future as a guarantee to not mess up my parent’s
