Louis Sachar is a very successful American author that has written multiple award-winning books. He was born in East Meadow, New York on March 20, 1954 and is now 64 years old. He writes children books as well as young adult books, one of his most popular being Holes, which has won the U.S. National Book Award as well as the Newbery Medal. Now located in Austin, Texas with his wife Carla and daughter named Sherre, Sachar continues to write as well as play cards. Sachar understands how to write for children and even though his newer books haven’t gained much attention, his earlier ones will always be popular amongst children.
Early life When he was nine, he and his family moved to Tustin, California, where they stayed for the rest of his childhood. One part of his childhood he remembers is how he and all the local kids would gather into teams and have fights with the oranges that hung from orange groves. Now, the orange groves are gone replaced by restaurants and other structures. He was a smart and good student, but never had a great interest in reading until high school. It was in high school when he started to read many books and was inspired by authors like J.D. Salinger and Kurt Vonnegut.
