“Holes” by Louis Sachar was published in 1998 from Scholastic Publishing. It has received a Newbury Medal and the National Book Award. The book follows the story of Stanley Yelnats, a poor boy with bad luck due to his no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great- grandfather. Stanley is accused of stealing a baseball players shoes that were up for auction at a homeless shelter, a crime he did not commit. He is sent to Camp Green Lake, a juvenile detention camp , for his punishment. The camp is run by the Warden, an angry violent woman, Mr.Sir, a counselor who always has sunflower seeds, and Mr. Pendanski, the person in charge At this camp, him and many other boys like Zero, X-Ray, Squid, Magnet, Armpit and Zig Zag have to dig a hole everyday as a punishment. Soon, Stanley finds something, a shotgun shell that belonged to an outlaw, Kate Barlow . Kate Barlow was a teacher at a small school house. Sam sold onions to residents of the town. Sam was asked to repair the school house in exchange for her famous spiced peaches. They slowly fell in love but due to Sam being black, there love was forbidden to the town. Sam was then put to death by Charles Walker after the town burned down the school house. Kate becomes a bandit and steals from people all around, and normally killing them. One of those people is his great grandfather, who isn't killed but left in the desert.
