Louis Gates an African American grew up in the South during the 1950’s in the era where civil rights were recently underway. Gates shares how his family was finically stable and had some privileges such as dining in restaurants where people of colored weren’t welcomed. He recalls experiencing discrimination in his early childhood in which has father was referred to as “George” instead of his real name. A name that later Gates realized was offensive and disrespectful to colored people.
