King Louis was officially arrested on August 13, 1792 and was sent to the Temple (a Paris fortress used as a prison). On September 21, the National Assembly abolished the monarchy and declared France as a republic. That November, evidence of Louis XVI's secret dealings and counter-revolutionary interests were discovered, and him and his family were charged with treason.
The trial commenced in December, the National Convention's president Bertrand Barère was in agreement of the imprisonment of King Louis XVI.
