Some say that music connects people generation to generation; certain family traditions make it easy for elders to bond with the new generations with ease. In my family, we have strong Christmas Traditions and the one thing I can depend on is caroling and trimming the tree. Another family tradition is listening to Christmas and Jazz Music. My grandfather was a musician himself and of course, he being from Louisiana the Jazz genre became a natural sound to hear around my grandparents’ house. Even though I had no knowledge of the Jazz musician’s names, when I researched the two artists online, I realized that I had grown up listening to Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong my whole life. Ted Gioia’s book The History of Jazz, asserts, “Louis Armstrong was born August 4, 1901,” (pg. 46). While Thomas Brothers, the author of Louis Armstrong’s New Orleans explains, “the singer himself believed his birthday was July 1, 1900,” (pg.1). We definitely know he was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. Louis Armstrong’s inability to recall his childhood beginnings could stem from his teenage parents William Armstrong, his father and Mary Ann or Mayann his mother were not stable at all. Louis Armstrong’s childhood found him living with his paternal grandmother Mama Lucy. Young Armstrong was left unsupervised for long periods of time and eventually he found trouble on New Year’s Day and landed in jail. Incarceration for most can lead some people further down a destructive path, but for Louis Armstrong it would be the crucial stone in his path to greatness. Jail wasn’t the only thing Louis had going on at a young age by the age of sixteen he was married to a prostitute named Daisy Parker. That marriage soon ended after a short 5 years. The pattern of getting divorced after short years occurred twice again with Lil Hardin Armstrong and Alpha Smith until he found Lucille Wilson until the day he
