Louis Armstrong Accomplishments

Louis Armstrong was a man of many things. Though he was mainly known for his music as a singer and trumpeter, he also was a film star and comedian. Before I get into all the achievements that he had accomplished in his life time let’s start at the beginning. Louis Armstrong was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on August 4th, 1901. He was the son of Willie Armstrong and Mary Ann Armstrong and a sibling to Beatrice Armstrong Collins (sister). He lived with his family in an area nicknamed “The Battlefield” because of the fights and shootings that happen frequently there. Due to his father leaving when he was 5 and his mother working often Louis lived with his maternal grandmother. He did have a job and took odd jobs from a Jewish family who also helped raised him. He got in trouble on New Year’s in 1912 for firing a gun in the air when celebrating. He was then sent to a reform school known as Colored Waif's Home for Boys where he started to take an interest in music. By 1914, Louis was released from the reform school and started to get more involved with music.

In 1936 and 1937, Louis had undergone surgery on his vocal cords to remove the nodular growths that made his voice raspy. They were unsuccessful and cause his voice to grow increasingly gravelly. In 1938, Louis divorced Lil Hardin and married Alpha Smith. Their marriage was not a happy one and they ended up divorcing in 1942. That same year, Louis married for the fourth and final time to a Lucille Wilson. Though out the years, Louis Armstrong had gained nicknames such as named "Satchmo," "Pops" and, later, "Ambassador
