Lost Trust
My older sister keeps a diary. Every night before she goes to bed she writes in it. Sometimes she writes for only a few minutes, sometimes for a lot longer. When she’s done, she slides it back into the drawer of her nightstand, turns off the light, and goes to bed. Every night I go to sleep wondering what she writes in there.
One day we got in a fight. I teased her about a boy she liked at school. She got really mad at me. Then she ran to her room and slammed the door. She didn’t come out until it was time for supper. When she was in her room, I was sure she had started writing in her diary, and I was sure she was writing about me.

I think you really have to be mad to make your writing look angry. She wrote all about what I had said and how mean I had been, but then she said she wouldn’t have been that upset except that she really liked this Kevin guy. She’d even talked to him a few times after school, and she was pretty sure he liked her, too. But it really made her angry to be teased about it because she was so nervous about the whole thing.
Right then my bedroom door opened and she walked in. “Can I borrow your . . .” She stopped when she saw me move quickly to try to hide her diary, but it was too late. “What are you doing? Why do you have that? Where’d you get that?” she asked faster than I could answer. Each question got louder. I was scared and couldn’t really talk. “Give that back!” she screamed. “Give it here! Now! You jerk!” She grabbed it out of my hand and stomped out of the room.
My dad heard all the yelling and came to check. They talked in her room for a few minutes. Then he came in by me and closed the door. He was pretty calm but I could tell he wasn’t happy with me. He told me I had no right to take her personal property and read it—that she was more angry with me than ever before and I deserved it. He said more, but he didn’t have to. I felt like a real
