The characters are clearly differentiated because all of them have certain characteristics and personalities. Yakob is the “smart one” as his grandmother calls him, he is older than Arty and so he is more aware of how poorly grandmother treats anyone. Jay is more of the realist and Arty is a sympathizer. Arty is the younger sibling and he is just trying to be the best he can be to not upset his grandma no matter how much she succeeds. Eddie is the loving and compassionate father who is just trying to help his family. Aunt Bella has a genuine and sincere heart, she has positive intentions for her family and the people closest to her. But, she is often misunderstood. The grandmother has experienced a vigorous life and she tends to lash out on others but mostly she is just attempting to teach others. Uncle Louie is the “cool uncle” and is the toughest out of all the siblings. Finally, aunt Gert is the rational and sweet sibling who just wants everyone to get along.
The play was exceptional. Reading this play is something I enjoyed, it was a book you could not put down. The play and the families are vaguely relatable, you can connect them to your own life.
