The Lost City of Atlantis The Lost City of Atlantis was a story created by Plato. He claimed that a beautiful advanced island somewhere between Hercules’ Pillars. The city was protected by Poseidon and ruled by his son. Plato said that thousands of years before he was born the city began to get wealthier and more advanced, and with this they became morally corrupt. This angered the gods and they destroyed the city. As a result of this, the city sunk into the ocean. The Lost City of Atlantis is a myth, however it is not a true myth due to the fact that Plato made it up and there is no evidence pointing to the existence of Atlantis during his time. Plato’s story was passed down from generations and friends and it gets complicated. But, essentially the proof of this city came from an Egyptian priest who said he had ancient records of Atlantis. These records have never been found, but there are theories as to where these could be. Due to the lack of historical and scientific evidence, this helps justify the claims that Atlantis was just another story that Pluto made up to prove a point. Due to the mystery and common human curiosity, Atlantis has been referenced in many different areas of society. It’s found in anything from children’s television shows, SpongeBob, to many different books. Disney has even jumped in and made a movie, Atlantis: The Lost Empire. In the movie, a young explorer tries to help locate the lost city. The reoccurrence of the story of Atlantis in media has kept the myth alive and quite popular. In conclusion, the story of Atlantis has no scientific or historical evidence to prove it was ever real. However, the popularity has kept the story alive for centuries. Even though there is not proof that this city existed, I would classify this as a legend and a myth.
