He did not deserve to die, and was not meant to be killed. They had been stressing to eliminate the beast when it was inside their minds the whole time, and the only one who knew this was Ralph. While the boys were in a tumult over the “beast”, they were sensitive to anything in the moment. They wanted it gone. So when Simon stumbled over a steep edge of the rock in the dark night, they automatically assumed it was the “beast”. “Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood!” they chanted as they “screamed, struck, bit, and tore” the beast apart. And once the boys had realized what they had done, who they had actually killed...they were distraught. He was going to die anyway from previous abdominal injuries that resulted from the plane crash. Kate wanted to put him out of his misery, and Sawyer agreed. Dr. Jack Shepard felt obligated to save his life, while everyone else on the island felt it was unnecessary to waste materials and medicine on someone dying. Jack still had hope for him, but Mars realized it was pointless as well, because he would die in days time. So Mars talked Sawyer into using the one bullet the gun had left on him. Sawyer aimed at his chest and pulled the trigger. He meant to hit his heart, but had missed and the suffering for the Marshal began. Jack heard his gasping for air and knew it would take hours for him to die. He couldn't watch him be in pain as he died, so he did what he thought he had too. Jack held a pillow over Mars’ face until his body became lifeless. Jack and Sawyer are both responsible for his death, but Mars death I believe was assisted suicide. He wanted to die and he was already dying, Sawyer just attempted to speed up the process, and Jack was ultimately the one who killed Mars.
