Most children in foster care have experienced child abuse or neglect from a parent or family member. Although these children may have gone through some of the same situations each child deals with it differently. Some show actions of violence and some show no emoticons or feelings at all. There is help for each individual child but most of the time that help just isn't enough.
In the case of Samara a 14 year old girl who has been in the system since she was just 10 months old, my theory is her case is biological. She expressed no emotions. It is very difficult for children who have been so deeply tramatized to make a connection with another human being. It is hard to trust or connect and believe that they truly care about you. In the case of Beverly who is 15 years old, I believe her case is behavioral. Beverly entering the system when she was 7 years old she has not had the life of therapy and medication but abuse and neglect instead. She has more of an outlook and view on how badly the people you love can treat you. Learning that her mother had died of a drug overdose and being bounced from house to house made her angry. She expressed herself through her actions of violence. I believe that having her brother with her and having a connection with him gave her hope and faith that she can someday heal and have a similar connection with future relationships. After running away and finding her real father who had been absent in her life she showed less anger. She was simply happy to have him in her life.
