Losses While Still Alive

This quote is saying that what someone loses while still alive has a greater impact compared to death itself. When an individual has something that dies inside of them they still have to continue on while with death either deals with someone besides them specificly or they just end up dying. Either way something dying inside of an individual holds a deeper impact.

“The Book Thief” by Markus Zusak is a book that had many quotes and messages that were true about life and made me appreciate what I have. There was one quote that left a big impact on me, which was, “She was one of the few that made me wonder what it was to live,” (Zusak, The Book Thief). Since this quote was narrated by Death, I have a different understanding of it. At first, I thought this quote meant that because Liesel had gone through a lot, Death wondered what it would feel like to be alive.…

In the poem “The Prediction” by Mark Strand, the speaker states: the future came to her: rain falling on her husband's grave, rain falling on the lawns of her children, her own mouth filling with cold air, strangers moving into her house. (5-8) Strand uses the visual imagery of rain falling on a woman’s husband’s grieve to illustrate death’s effects on a woman as she confronts the end of human existence. Strand suggests that women are more sensitive to death; therefore, they grieve in various ways especially depending on the relationship with the man. In particular,…

Again the author stresses the importance of God through alluding mortality by showing God’s influential assistance during Beowulf’s battles. The first battle that Beowulf puts his trust in God was the battle with Grendel. Beowulf explicitly stated that he will fight the demon with his bare hands and “whoever death takes / will have to trust in the judgement of God (Beowulf 440-441).” Grendel is a descendent of Cain and will never put his trust in God. Beowulf has faith in God and has shown it which is why he trusts that God’s judgment will be the right choice.…

This essay will argue for Socrates’ views that one cannot both fear death, ultimately avoiding it at all costs, while acting in a manner that would be to one’s benefit. It is impossible to believe both of these statements because they are contradictory. In Apology, Socrates is put on trial, convicted of being guilty, and sentenced to death. After Socrates is told his fate, he makes a statement claiming that it is quite likely that this ruling is a positive thing, and people who believe that death is wicked are incorrect (Plato, Apology, 40b).…
