Loss Of Power In Antigone

In order to preserve society, a balance of individual and state must be addressed as well as one’s personal conscience. Government’s hold a lot of power, and they let that power go to their head. They let their pride, fear, arrogance, and vanity get the best of them. This affects their personal and lawful decisions. Also people deserve to be able to stand up for what they believe in without being scared. These individuals are afraid to do what they think is morally right because of the fear of ridicule and punishment from the government and their peers. Lastly, governments are concerned that if people start to question their decision they will lose power. Government’s hold too much power, and when one individual or group holds too much power they start to let pride, vanity, fear, and arrogance affect their lawful decisions. This needs to change so that society can be preserved. One example of this is when Creon becomes king in the tragedy Antigone he becomes very one minded. He made a decree that Polyneices should not be buried by anybody because he was a traitor, and if anyone was to bury him they would be stoned to death. So when Antigone buried her brother Polyneices, Creon immediately became infuriated and announced that Antigone was to be killed. He didn’t consider that Antigone buried him because he was her brother, he immediately thought that Antigone did it to go against him. His arrogance led him not to see that Antigone only buried Polyneices because of their relationship, and she wanted to make sure that his soul would be accepted by the gods. Also, his fear that he would be overthrown if he was to not abide to his own decree made him think that killing Antigone was the only way to keep his power that he craved so badly. One of the biggest examples of government oppression is the Tiananmen Square Protests of 1989. These protests were peaceful and were led by college students. The protesters wanted government accountability, freedom of the press, freedom of speech, and the restoration of workers’ control over industry. China’s communist government did not agree with what the students were fighting for, so they decided to make sure that no one else in China started to think that way. So on June 4th the Chinese government stormed Tiananmen Square, where they were protesting, and killed thousands of unarmed civilians. They ran them over with tanks, and open fired until the protesting stopped. This is one of the events that has happened because a government had become fearful of power loss. A second example that supports this statement is how Creon would not even dare to think about Antigone’s situation. The only thing he cared about was showing the rest of Thebes that no one should want to bury a traitor and if you didn’t agree with that, you would die. Creon chose to kill Antigone so that he could set an example for the rest of the city. It shows that if you disagreed with the king, he would kill you. This struck fear into the hearts of his citizens. Governments for centuries have chosen to simply get rid of

She believes that the law of the gods is superior to any other law, even though Creon, the new king of Thebes, orders that Polyneices body is not to be buried as punishment for his wrongdoings. Antigone knew that by burying her brother, she would be put to death, yet she felt so strongly about doing the right thing in the eyes of the gods that she had to go and bury her brother anyway (Sophocles 37). Antigone’s civil disobedience of the law is very direct. Instead of trying to protest the unfair treatment of Polyneices’ body and get together a group of people to try and get the law to be changed, she favors direct action and does the burial ritual as well as covering the body with dirt against the rules of king Creon. It is not only the rules of the gods that influences Antigone’s civil disobedience, but also her brotherly love for Polyneices.…

“Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely” said historian Lord Acton. In Sophocles’ Antigone, Oedipus the King of Thebes has newly departed after disgracing his people, and his successors to the throne Polynices and Eteocles have died in battle, leaving his brother Creon to inherit his throne. From the beginning, Creon uses his newfound power to impose excessive punishments against not only the innocent people of Thebes, but also his family. As a result, the people of Thebes recognize this abuse of power and express their fears through not only the chorus but also his son, whom he both chooses to disregard. Finally, Creon not only abuses the people of Thebes with his power, but also uses it to offend the Gods by intentionally breaking their divine laws.…
