Both stories have the theme of loss of innocence. In Gilmour’s story, Simon, son of Roman, gets abducted. This is not a normal thing for parents to experience. This is a loss of innocence for Simon, because he’s not being taken care by his parents, instead, he’s been taken care by some random stranger who has kidnapped him. “By the time she got downstairs, he was gone” (Gilmour) It’s all Roman’s fault because of how careless he was with his child. Simon has got stolen and no one knows where he is. He is taken away from his parents, which most children do not experience. The book is trying to tell and teach its readers to take more care of their child and show them how important your child is to you, even though sometimes you can hate them. In addition, A Perfect Night to go to China has the same theme as well as A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier. In Beah’s story, Ishmael, has spread apart from his family. He either killed people or have seen people get killed. It’s not a normal thing for a child to be given a gun to at a very young age and were told to kill people. “I hadn’t parted with my gun since the day I became a soldier.” (Beah) Ishmael had to be a soldier at a very young age to protect his village and resources from getting stolen by the rebels. This is a loss of innocence because instead of him going outside, playing with friends and going to school, he kills people. The violence that he has seen are really harsh and are normally not recommended for children to see but Ishmael, has. In summary, A Perfect Night to go to China and A Long Way Gone; Memories of a Boy Soldier both share the loss of innocence
