Mary Rowlandson’s Narrative
Mary Rowlandson wrote about multiple journeys she was forced to take during her time in captivity. During the time she was held captive, her faith in God would be tested. In her narrative, Rowlandson speaks of what her and her family endured at the hands of the Indians. Although the narrative goes into details of the specific journeys or removes, her faith was clearly tested but how she managed to stay alive. Her faith allowed her to identify when God helped her through an experience, relate specific scriptures to experiences, and owe her salvation to the lord.

She is pulling faith from those scriptures that she will be okay when her faith began to weaken. During another journey or remove, she mentioned that she was not accustomed to taking on such dangerous adventures before this experience and referenced a scripture that she used to draw faith from. She referenced “When thou passeth through the waters I will be with thee, and through the Rivers they shall not overflow thee, Isai. 43. 2” (Rowlandson 78). That scripture gave her courage to do what she was being forced to do. Later in her narrative, she asked her master to let her be sold to her husband and he agreed. When she was starting her journey home, her mistress became ill which forced them to go back and not continue her journey home until the master returned. She was very upset about her journey home being derailed or delayed and mentioned how this scripture came to her hand when she pulled her bible, “Psal. 46. 10. Be still and know that I am God” (Rowlandson 82). That restored her faith that she would still be going to her husband.
