This was explained when Blanche was on a date with Mitch, which was surprising because it's not the type of conversation you would have on a first date. I believe this is the cause of Blanches’ struggle for affection because her first husband committed suicide after she caught him with another man. Blanch said some horrible things and after that night she never returned to her true mental state. This greatly impacted Blanche because she was used to everything being perfect and she thought she found the man of her dreams, but sadly she didn't. After this happened she lost Belle Reve so of course she didn't want to be alone. She lost everything that ever mattered to her. Her husband, home, job, and even Stella at the time. After that kind of trauma it was justified when Blanche said, “I want to be near you, got to be with somebody-I can't be alone!”(17). After something as major as that happened to someone, of course you wouldn't want to be alone. She was all alone and after his death she searched for anyway to fill the void. Although the way she discovered wasn't the best choice she had ever made, her brain was fogged up and nothing else seemed logical at the time. Blanche “had many intimacies with strangers….[it] was all I seemed to be able to fill my empty heart with.”(146). Blanche tried so hard to hid her past from her sister, and especially Stanley, but he found any way possible to dig as far as her could into her past. This explained how Blanche lost her job because as she stated later on in the text that she had also found interest in seventeen year old boys. Blanche was so desperate for any form of affection that she went to any extreme to get the high she needed. I believe it worked for awhile, but it only took a bit of time before she would need another shot and move onto her next victim. When you have to resort to those extremes just to get any form of attention, imagine the damage it would do to a person's mental state. Blanche was not okay, but she also didn't tell people what was going on so it was hard for her sister to know that she needed proper
