Being overweight or obese is something that is not uncommon in American. It is often associated with the development of type 2 diabetes and has a negative impact on an individual emotionally. Over the next three months I have developed a SMART goal in order to lose ten pounds. This will not only help me be successful in nursing school, but also in my future career as a nurse.
Obesity
According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (2012), “The terms "overweight" and "obesity" refer to body weight that’s greater than what is considered healthy for a certain height” (Para 1). Being overweight or obese is something that many people struggle with throughout their lifetimes, and I am no different. Having recently lost 40 pounds, I am determined to lose the last ten pounds, and reach my optimal weight goal. Losing the weight would put me at a healthy weight on the BMI scale, and would give me the confidence to know that I can do whatever I set out to do.

Research by Hays and Ross (1986), states “Compared to a normal weight persons, overweight individuals have different levels of various chemicals (such as estrogen) in the body and these chemicals affect mood. Also social stigma attached to being overweight may increase physiological distress” (Page 387). With these additional physiological stresses it may be hard for an individual to strive in their life. Before my current weight loss, I experienced the negative effects that carrying extra weight can have. I no longer wanted to participate in activities that I once enjoyed because of the fear of what others thought of me. The emotional distress can consume you.
