Los Zetas
Due November 21, 2014
Los Zetas Los Zetas is a very large Mexican drug cartel. The Los Zetas cartel was formed back in the early 90’s when a group of Mexican army commandos left their ranks and became associated with a different drug cartel known as the gulf cartel. Los Zetas was formed but then broke off from their gulf cartel employer. They started their own drug cartel in which they are still with and it is still called Los Zetas. This issue is just like many others in Mexico. There are drug cartels all over Mexico and they are really dangerous with Los Zetas being the most dangerous. Los Zetas has killed more than 60,000 people since 2006. The drug trafficking goes on throughout all of Mexico.

In 2011, one of the co-founders of Los Zetas was captured by the Mexican authorities after killing an unarmed U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent on a highway ambush. He was considered the gangs third most powerful leader and his name was Jesus Enrique Rejon Aguilar. He was 35 and in Mexico’s top 5 most wanted people. However more recently at the end of July 2014, Miguel Angel Trevino Morales, the boss and leader from Los Zetas, was captured by Mexican marines. It has been said that no shots were fired at all. Miguel was caught driving on the highway in a small pickup truck. Contained in the truck was a numerous amount of assault rifles and oddly 2 million dollars. Since Miguel was captured, the Mexican authorities believe that the violence of the gang will slow. The authorities describe him as “the last stitch holding them together”. On the other hand, citizens are saying that they want more protection and that Los Zetas will be more dangerous now because they do not have their leader. People think this will create uprising within the gang and much more violence to occur with people trying to become leader.
Today, Los Zetas is moving more and more into the United States through Texas. They have started to expand and are beginning to recruit U.S. citizens into the gang. To do this, they are finding street gangs and prison gangs. Los Zetas has also been found in southern countries such as Guatemala

The brutality of this gang stands unmatched by any other major gang; the only true rival is 18th street gang which is also a Hispanic gang. In late 2010 El Salvador had a total of 27,000 gang members from both MS-13 and 18th St. The violence between the two was so intense that governments had to step in order to settle some sort of truce just to control the violence. It does not stop there however, MS has gone head to head with a very dangerous and powerful cartel known as Los Zetas. In 2010 MS had a run in with Zetas over territory which resulted in a bloody war that ended with a truce and an agreement between the two; MS would control the southern portion of the territory while the Zetas would control the northern area (Farah 2012).…

In border towns like Juarez, where the drug cartels have city officials in the palms of their hands, border violence is rampant. In Laredo, Texas, my hometown, violence has not reached that level of intensity, but with its status as the largest land port in the country, drug cartels have focused most of their efforts on pushing drugs through its borders. There has even been an increased amount of Border Patrol activity in the surrounding area. What has seen the brunt of the drug cartel violence has been Nuevo Laredo, the sister city of Laredo on the Mexican side of the border.…

Focusing on a culture can clarify unknown things we are ignorant about. Choosing a new society to evaluate and discuss is very hard because of the cultural diversity in the current world. Also, each culture is unique and distinguished from others in many things. However, Mexican culture is highly intriguing and it is highly affected today by the violent drug Cartels, criminal organizations that deal with narcotics. In addition, Mexico is the main drug supplier for the United States; drug cartels have become increasingly lucrative and militarized, “Most of the adult urban population of Mexico, 10.4% of them (representing 5.2 million people in total) had used illicit substances at some point in their lifetime”.…

When it comes to Latin American gangs that operate in multiple countries, many people may think of gangs such as the MS-13 or the Latin Kings. However, there is another gang that is just as violent and large as the ones that I have mentioned above, and they are known as the 18th Street Gang, or Barrio 18. As for colors, they wear blue, and as for symbols, they use the number 18, or they occasionally spell the number out using Roman numerals. We see traces of the gang originating as far back as the 1950’s, in Los Angeles, California, but the first official sightings of the gang are seen in the 1980’s in the same location, and gained attention in the Rodney King Riots that occurred in 1992.…
