Since my heritage comes from a Hispanic background I grew up with a lot of novellas thanks to my Abuela. However, they were too dramatized for me so I stuck with my English shows. One show I loved was Mysteries of Laura that played on NC. However the show was cancelled and I was searching why it was cancelled. This led me to discover that this show is an American remake of Los Misterios de Laura. The novella has the same premise and was developed in 2009. Soon I will watch the series in Spanish and compare the two programs. As a writer, one that likes to write mysteries and have my main character be female, this show was a great influence to me. It is rare to find a show where the protagonist is a female, who is imperfect and the show displayed this. As I stated in another post, American stereotypes people, places and cultures. Stereotyping I believe is a negative aspect of globalization. Tourist will relish in Manhattan but miss out on the other boroughs and cultures they bring due to fear of what has been portrayed. I grew up in the South Bronx since I was born and actually never dealt with a mugging, killing, or aggression that is portrayed in the media. However, there are positives to portrayal of New York City through globalization. NYC is one of the busiest cities and we continue to thrive in business and opportunities. Various immigrants or travelers come here to receive chances to stardom whether it is in theater, art, film, or business. As Jay Z and Alicia Keys have stated in their music Concrete jungle where dreams are made of, anything is possible here. Media has always shown a person coming from a little town into the bustling city and making it, which is just an aspect of the American Dream.
