The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) is the Sheriff’s Department in the United States (LASD 2017). The department has three duties, including patrolling the county, providing security for the courthouses, and the housing of inmates in the county jail system.
Sheriffs do have a duty to serve and protect the community, nonetheless, they may also have their flaws. The department began in April 1850 when the first sheriff, George T. Burrill, was elected (LASD 2014). Sheriff Burrill’s duty was to enforce the law and collect taxes to fund the department. The L.A. County received the old guardhouse from the military in order to create the wooden structured jail to incarcerate prisoners. The LASD’s mission was to enforce the law fairly and defend the rights of all. As well as leading the fight to prevent crime and injustice. Sheriff’s must gain the trust of the community through liability. Not only is it their goal to protect the community, they must also provide a safe and secure court system. The LASD serves the Los Angeles County of California, which consists of 4,084 square miles with about ten million residents. The department has about eighteen thousand employees with a budget of about under three million dollars (Trujillo 2018). The money of the LASD is funded from taxes and the money is generally spent on the employee’s salaries.
The LASD would answer to whoever they are contracted under, which would be the five member board of supervisors, who are the governing body of Los Angeles County. The Sheriff is one who manages the LASD. The Sheriff earns their job from experience in the field and by being elected by qualified voters of L.A. County. As of 2014, Sheriff Jim McDonnell was sworn in as the 32nd L.A. County Sheriff (LASD 2017).
