Los Angeles County Museum Art Analysis

For my museum paper assignment, I went to the Los Angeles County Museum to find an art piece. In the museum, I found an interesting art piece made by Hans Siebert von-Heister. The art piece is called “Anger”, it was made in Germany, 1920. Its oil on canvas and the scale is Frame: 31 x 26 x 1 ½, 24 ½ x 19in. This art piece uses some of formal elements and design principles to make the art very interesting to examine. For example, Heister used color and shapes to design the beasts and proportion and scale to make the beast big to catch people’s attention. When people are angry, their face become red with anger on their face and they look intimidating to other people. This art was made to reflect the German people after World War 1. According to an article about questions for Heister’s art “Anger”, “It references the anger experienced by the Germans following World War 1 which was part of the popular culture of Germany at the time.” After the Germans were defeated, the people were in constant poverty and the Allies forces were failing to refinance the people. This art shows their anger of the situation. The art piece is an abstract piece because of the fact that the beast is in a distorted form and is nowhere near realistic in the modern world. The use of the formal element color made the beast gives of a heated, evil background. The color red can signify the emotion anger because of the intensity of the color itself. The color black also signifies evil because of how the color shows negative emotions to other people. The mixture of both colors has really made the appearance of the beast threatening, to represent anger itself. The other formal element the artist uses is shaped to make the beast
