Authors, like Lorraine Hansberry, use their literature to create a theme to relate to all readers. In the play A Raisin in the Sun written by Lorraine Hansberry, each member in the Younger’s family have hopes and dreams they want to achieve. Though, none of them have enough money to achieve their dreams, that is until they get a check for 10,000 dollars from their deceased father. Which Walter ends up losing to his friend after trying to invest in a bar. Hansberry uses this play to create the theme that, money has the ability to change people's attitude. But, when they got more money she starts to wonder if having this baby is possible. With the money in front of her, …show more content…
One example of money changing other characters attitude in this play includes, When Beneatha started crying in the hallway because Walter loses all the money, and she doesn’t want to become a doctor anymore. Beneatha believes it isn’t even worth trying to become a doctor. Being a doctor was very important to Beneatha, it was so important to her, “Beneatha: I wanted to cure. It used to be important to me...It used to matter”(Hansberry 133). Beneatha wanted to be a doctor for her entire life. If it was what she has worked for. Though, her sobbing and telling Asagai she doesn’t want to be a doctor anymore is shocking. No man and no family member would get in her way. now, within seconds of losing that money she decides she doesn’t want to cure people anymore. That is a huge change in Beneatha's attitude. When Ruth decides to consider getting an abortion it is similar to how beneatha decides not to be a doctor, These are two things neither of them would either do or even imagine if they had enough money. Money caused them to completely change their attitude about these two
