What if you saw your dream crumble right in front of you? That is what happened to Walter Lee Younger in the captivating play written by Lorriane Hansberry, A Raisin in the Sun. Walter lives with his wife, Ruth, his song, Travis, his sister, Beneatha, and his mother, Lena, in a small apartment in Chicago. Ever since the death of his father, Big Walter, the family has been talking about the big check of $10,000 that is coming from their insurance company. Walter has told Lena, Mama in the play, that he wants to invest in a liquor store with his two friends Willy and Bobo. Mama does not approve of it and denies the choice that Walter has made, if he ever got the money. Therefore, Walter’s dream is deferred because the family does not approve …show more content…
In the play, Mama gives Walter some of the money, he is very glad, yes, and however, Mama also told him to transfer the other money that she gave him to the bank. The other money was for Beneatha’s school. Towards the end of Act 2, Bobo told Walter that Willy had run off with all of the money, including the money for Beneatha’s schooling. That was the biggest road block for Walter, and for Beneatha as well. Walter overcame the problem just like what any other person would do, try to walk away from it. He really did not do anything about it except for grieve about it. Yes, the whole family got upset by it, but that doesn’t stop the family from buying their house. Sure, the family may have lost all of that money, but Walter overcame that by telling () that they are going to buy the house and live there happily like everyone else. A quote that Walter said was, ‘Cause sometimes it is hard to let the future begin!” (118 Hansberry) what he means by saying this was that he expected for his dream to go the right way, but it takes a complete different
