Every person has the power to create their own future, regardless of their past. In the play “A Raisin in the Sun”, written by Lorraine Hansberry, the Younger family are suffering financially. Our protagonist, Walter Lee Younger, is portrayed as a reckless man who puts his own wants before his family’s needs. After a series of turmoil regarding Walter and a ten thousand dollar check, a new home is what the Younger family still has left. That does not last long when a man tells the family that they should not stay in that area. However, Walter makes the decision that they “have decided to move into our house…and we will try to be good neighbors”. In other words, he rejected the idea of his loved ones live in the past as an underprivileged family who are constantly unhappy. He had to look after his father who eventually became ill much to Elie’s apparent annoyance. In the past, we can assume that if Elie’s father was sick, Elie would take care of him. However, when his father passed away (his only family left and the person who gives him encouragement) Elie even tells us that “since my father’s death, nothing mattered to me anymore”. Elie lost his faith and his persistence to believe in God. His “only one desire…to eat” shows us that he believes that his future will be nothing more than eating and torture. If he still had faith in God like he used to in the past, he could have found strength and a reason to keep on
