A Raisin in the Sun is a drama about the Youngers, an African American family living in a small apartment in the year of 1959 on the southside of chicago. The Youngers are not wealthy, Mama works for a white family as a house cleaner and Walter (the son of Mama) works also for white people as a Chauffeur. The family has recently lost their Father/Husband and a ten thousand dollar Health insurance check is on its way. Walter wants to invest the money into a liquor store. Everyone sees walter as the head of the family, but they think that it's a bad idea to invest the money into a liquor store. Walter says “Here I am a giant-surrounded by ants. Ants who ain’t ever understand what the giant is talking about.” Walter sees himself as a high and mighty person that people should look up to and listen to. …show more content…
The author uses the symbol “light” to represent Hope and we all know that it's a lot easier to do something when you believe that you can do it. Mama then uses about two thousand dollars for a down payment on a house, in a white neighborhood and walter is very upset about not living his dream of becoming a businessman and getting rich like the “white man”. When Mama announces that she made a down payment Beneatha (the daughter of Mama and sister of Walter) asks Mama a very important question; “Is there a lot of light in the new house?” its interesting because it’s as if the author wrote the drama and made sure to make it seem as though the characters know what the symbols
