In the play “A Raisin in the Sun” by Lorraine Hansberry a little family lives in this tiny apartment. They have very little money, but they are waiting on an insurance check. The two most important people of the play is Mama and Ruth. Mama is a wonderful woman. She loves to make sure others are at their best. Mama is now the head of her family since her husband died. Mama takes care of her family at her best ability. She wants her family to be happy and not have to worry about certain things. Mama wants the insurance check so that she can go out and buy her family a house with more room. In the play Mama says to Travis, “She went out and she bought a house!”. Mama didn’t want Walter to take the money and invest in the liquor store because she wanted to take it and buy a house with it. …show more content…
Walter is her selfish son. He wants to take the money and invest it into the liquor store. Mama doesn’t want him to do that. Instead, Mama just went out and bought her family a house to live in. In the play Mama tells Walter “Son-you-you understand what I have done, don’t you?” Mama wants Walter to understand that buying the house was a better option for them. Ruth is a settled woman. She is considerate of other people’s feelings. Ruth is an important because she a mini version of Mama. Ruth wants her family to succeed just as much a Mama does. She also wants Mama to just stop worrying about her family and just focus on herself more. In the play Ruth tells Mama, “now that’s your money it doesn’t have nothing to do with me. We all feel like that-Walter and Bennie and me-even Travis.” Mama doesn’t want to just take the money for herself she wants to help her family too.
