Lorraine Hansberry's A Raisin In The Sun

Some people go through life dreaming small because they are scared they might be let down in the end result. So they go through life not knowing how much they are able to see and experience. Throughout a Raisin in the Sun, the author Lorraine Hansberry shows that the Younger family thinks just the opposite. The Younger family dreams big and fight for what they want, no matter how hard it might be to achieve their goal, they keep fighting.

Throughout the play a Raisin in the Sun, Lorraine Hansberry develops the theme of the American dream through the eyes of Walter, Beneatha and Mama. Walter says, “Yeah you see, this little liquor store we got in mine cost seventy-five thousand, see. That be ten thousand each. Course there’s a couple of hundred you got to pay so’s you don’t spend your life just waiting for them clowns to let your license get approved.” (pg 33). Walter feels that buying this liquor store is a smart idea and that it will solve all his problems and truly make him happy. Having the liquor store to call his own is Walter American dream and it’s something that he’s wanted to do for a long time. Later on in the play Walter ends up realizing that he’s made a big mistake about buying the liquor store. Bobo is explaining to Walter that he was waiting for Willy to show up with the money, but Willy never showed. Bobo tells Walter, “That’s what I’m trying to tell you... I don’t know... I waited six hours... I waited in the train station six hours... that was all the extra money I had in this world...”(pg 127). Walter now feels like he can’t trust anyone, he’s realizing that he’s made a big mistake and should have listened to his family.
