He wanted to make a lot of money, and he figured he had a full proof plan to do it. He wanted to invest into a liquor store with a couple of friends of his, not knowing that this was probably the biggest mistake of his life. Walter just wanted a shot at the American dream, and this was his idea of achieving that. He wanted to prosper instead of living cooped up in a tiny apartment. He was tired of having his son sleep in the living room, he wanted support from his wife on his dreams. He exclaims “ That’s it. There you are. Man say to his woman: I got me a dream, His woman say: eat you eggs.” Meaning he wasn’t getting the support or the conversation he was hoping for from his wife it just seemed as if he was overwhelmed with his social status hew just wanted to get out. Unfortunately, the store did not pull through like Walter had planned and he ended up losing all of his investment money sending him into an even deeper, depressed state. This situation can be further exemplified by Langston Hughes poem “ Harlem”. The speaker states “ What happens to a dream deferred? Does it dry up, like a raisin in the sun?” (1043). This is ironic because the title of this play is “ a Raisin in the Sun” and Walters dream did exactly that, dried up like a raisin in the sun. He had the money and then in a split second he absolutely lost
